Benefits of Giving Sadaqah

Today we are going to look at the benefits of sadaqah or benefits of giving sadaqah to a Moslem. Sadaqah is a word that carries a softness with it, alongside deep spiritual significance. Most simply, it means charity, but there is much complexity and depth. Giving Sadaqah is the act of giving from the heart freely, without obligation and with the sincere intention of pleasing Allah. Unlike mandatory Zakat, it has no set amount or time, acts as a continuous reward (Sadaqah Jariyah), and purifies wealth while strengthening community bonds.

What is Sadaqah?

The word Sadaqah is an Arabic word, coming from the word ‘sidq’ which means truthfulness and sincerity. This reminds us that at the heart of Sadaqah lies sincerity and intention, and from this comes its value. It’s not about the size of the Sadaqah but why it is being given. The best Sadaqah is that given with the intention of pleasing Allah (swt) and seeking closeness to Him.

Charity is mentioned many times in the Qur’an and we are taught that it purifies the giver, while uplifting the receiver. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that charity is a shield from hardship, a protection against hardships and evil. He (PBUH) advised us to give often, in good times and in bad, even if all we have is a small date or a morsel of food.

Key Types of Sadaqah

  • Sadaqah Jariyah (Ongoing Charity): This is charity with long-term benefits, where rewards continue even after death. Examples include planting trees, building schools, hospitals, or mosques, sponsoring a child’s education, or providing water wells.
  • Sadaqah al-Fitr (Fitrana): A mandatory charity given by Muslims at the end of Ramadan before the Eid prayer to ensure the poor can celebrate.
  • Financial Contributions (Nafl Sadaqah): Voluntary monetary donations, such as giving money to the needy, supporting orphans, donating clothes, or providing food to the hungry.

Benefits of giving Sadaqah

Spiritual Protection and Reward: Sadaqah repels calamities, protects against bad deaths, and serves as a shield against hardships. It is rewarded immensely by Allah, with potential for multiplication.

Purification of Soul and Wealth: It purifies the heart from negative traits like greed, selfishness, and arrogance while cleansing wealth.

Forgiveness of Sins: It wipes away sins, as Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) mentioned it “extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire”.

Blessings in Wealth (Barakah): Giving does not decrease wealth; rather, it increases it and brings blessings, contrary to the human fear of loss.

Shade on Judgment Day: Regular Sadaqah provides shade and security for the believer on the Day of Judgment.

Emotional and Social Well-being: It fosters gratitude, compassion, and mental well-being, while providing vital support to the needy.

Long-term Impact (Sadaqah Jariyah): Certain forms of charity continue to provide rewards even after the donor passes away.

How To Give Sadaqah Today

There are infinite causes you can give your Sadaqah to, especially in our world which is increasingly impacted by poverty, disasters and conflict. It is entirely up to you whether you want your Sadaqah to have a local or global impact. There are many people and causes in need locally, so your Sadaqah could go towards a soup kitchen, the local mosque or a family in your community who is struggling. Across the world people are facing unimaginable hardships, so your Sadaqah could go towards providing clean water in a village in Africa
